The Plot to Kill Jesus
As passover drew near the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death as they feared the people.
Judas to Betray Jesus
Satan possessed Judas and had him confer with the chief priests about how he might betray Jesus. They were happy and gave him some money.
Strange that Satan's involvement was not mentioned in Matthew or Mark.
The Passover with the Disciples
Jesus sends Peter and John ahead to prepare passover dinner
Institution of the Lord's Supper
Jesus passes around bread saying it is his flesh and wine saying it is his blood. Then he said someone at the table would betray him. The disciples were shocked.
This isn't the basis of transubstantiation is it? It must say it more explicitly somewhere else. Right?
Who Is the Greatest?
They fight over who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, Jesus says to let the leaders serve and the least the greatest.
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
Peter says he will go with Jesus to death and Jesus says he will deny Jesus 3 times before the rooster crows.
Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus
Jesus asks if they were lacking when he sent them out with no moneybag or knapsack. They said no. He said now let the one how has a moneybag take it and likewise a knapsack. And if you have no sword sell your cloak to buy one. For the scripture must be fulfilled in me.
Um...what? What does the scripture being fulfilled mean? It sounds like Jesus is telling his guys to get ready for a battle. I'm confused
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
Jesus tells his disciples not to succumb to temptation, then he prays to God that he won't have to die. When he gets back to his disciples he asks why they aren't praying that they won't succumb to temptation.
Not sure if I am reading that right, but I'm not sure what else "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me." would mean.
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
Judas came up to Jesus to kiss him but Jesus asked if he was being betrayed. One of Jesus' guys cut off the ear of one of the guys coming after Jesus. Jesus said to stop, healed the guy, and went with them.
Peter Denies Jesus
Jesus was taken and Peter followed and settled by a fire among some servants. One girl said he was with Jesus and he denied it a few times, then the rooster crowed.
Jesus Is Mocked
The men who were holding Jesus were mocking him. They blindfolded him and beat him and then asked him to tell a prophecy of who beat him.
Jesus Before the Council
They ask Jesus if he is the son of God, he says that they claimed he is and they said that is good enough.
There is something strange about this interaction to me.
Institution of the Lord's Supper. Growing up Catholic, this was taken very literally. I believe that this is the justification for communion.

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus. I think the verse about selling your coat to buy a sword is pretty eye opening. I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt here, but if its a metaphor for spiritual battle, while would you need to sell your coat? Does the coat mean old ideas? Or being passive? It does sound like when he said that he did not come to bring peace but a sword.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives. Interesting that here he asks his father if he'd be willing to be spared this horrible fate. In John he accepts his fate.
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus. It's a bit weird to notice the differences here as well. In John he identifies himself, but here he identified by Judas.
Peter Denies Jesus. I know I've pointed this out before, but all of the gospels tell the story of the cock crowing a bit differently.
Jesus Before the Council. It might seem strange because its different from Mark in his interaction. Here he is direct, but in Mark, he is indirect.
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial: the contradiction is about the number of times the rooster crows right? I lean toward letting that detail go, it seems reasonable to me that given 2 people telling this story, one would find that the rooster crows twice important and another would not. There are better contradictions to focus on imo.
ReplyDeleteJesus prays on the mount of olives: Yeah, like that. This is the stuff that it seems to me is more worth the time. In one book he says X, in the other he says 'why would I say X? That would make no sense'
