But why blog about it? I was thinking about an old roommate of mine who kept a spreadsheet when he watched TNG giving scores for each episode. It was nice as it gave him a quick reference if he wanted to go back at check out his favorite episodes, and being the nerds we were, we had a lot of fun "discussing" the rating he gave certain episodes. I was going to keep such a spreadsheet, but then I realized, blogging is fun, and maybe some people would be interesting in giving their own ratings and we can have fun arguing about which episodes are the best.

Who are some of your favorite Star Trek characters? I'm fond of characters who provide an outsider's perspective on humanity, such as Data and Odo.
ReplyDeleteHard question, there are definitely a lot of characters that I like, Data and Odo are definitely up there. Gul Dukat was always great, and of course Garak. I could go on, but I'd probably just wind up naming nearly the entire cast.
DeleteYou are right, and outsiders perspective is always good, it let's us look at things differently than we are used to. I think that is at the heart of why I have always been partial to science fiction.
I saw reruns of the original Star Trek when I was a kid, and really enjoyed it. I think you're in for a treat.
ReplyDeleteI'm a TOS guy, I really don't care much for any of the newer series. While most of them might be enjoyable watching on their own, they never had the same feel as the original series, sort of the same thing with the prequels over the original Star Wars movies.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on next gen, so it has an unfair nostalgia advantage for me, it will probably always be my favorite. But I have been enjoying the hell out of the original series so far, granted I'm only a few episodes in as of yet. This looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.
DeleteI grew up on TOS though, Next Gen didn't show up until I was in high school and by then... not that interested. I thought the writing, at least in the first couple of seasons, was awful, there were plot holes that you could pilot the Excelsior through, etc. It wasn't until years later that I went back and watched some of the later seasons and found them passable. TNG was what they invented the term "technobabble" for and I still can't excuse their use of nonsense language to describe magic tech.
DeleteThat's quite true, the first 2 seasons of TNG were pretty brutal. Other than a few episodes I generally would say people should skip the first 2 seasons.
DeleteAs to the technobabble, it never bothers me, probably because I saw it for the first time when I was so young. And a certain amount of it is probably going to be expected in a show of this type, although they do go overboard.
